Revealing the Secrets of the Mekong Giant Catfish by Biologist Experts from Angkor Wildlife and Aquarium (AWA)

Mekong Giant Catfish inhabit the turbid and muddied water of the mighty Mekong River and its tributaries, so it may have been their introduction into AWA’s crystal clear water that has given these fish their vision to grow to 1.7m already!

The Mekong River's Majestic Species

AWA’s x6 Giant Catfish were previously rescued from a privately owned, closed-bodied Lake and rescued to their current residence at AWA’s 500,000 Liter freshwater Mekong Aquarium.

With some of the fastest growth rates of any fish species, Mekong Giant Catfish is the second largest freshwater fish in the world (#1 also being a resident of the Mekong River, the Giant Freshwater Stingray recorded at up to 300kg!), regularly sizing to 200kg and living up to 60 years.

Indigenous communities of the Mekong believe it’s a sacred fish because it persists on plant matter and ‘meditates’ in the deep, stony pools of the Mekong River, somewhat like a Buddhist monk.

Despite its immense size, the Giant Catfish lacks teeth and is predominantly a ‘filter-feeder’, mostly feeding on zooplankton, algae, bacteria, and larvae.

At AWA, the Mekong Giant Catfish are fed a combination of plankton-like foodstuffs and nutritious pellets, a spectacle that unfolds daily as our divers hand-feed the animals using bottles.

Safeguarding the Future of a Sacred Species

Mekong giant catfish is believed to spend much of its time feeding in Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake and then migrating hundreds of miles north to spawning grounds in Thailand.

However, conservationists are deeply concerned for the fish’s future. Historic catches suggest the population was once between a hundred and a thousand times larger than it is today.

In Cambodia, a tagging and release program operates for several big Mekong fish species that are caught in nets stationed in the main river channels. These species include the giant barb, the giant freshwater stingray, and the river catfish. The fish are tagged, measured, and then released, with fishermen compensated for the return of these fish to the wild.

AWA & ICM are proud to have provided an appropriate space for these gentle giants, accommodated with the highest husbandry standards, and where more can be observed and understood about what is normally a behaviorally cryptic species, both educating about and preserving their wild counterparts and the ecosystems they occupy.

Celebrating 30 Years: A Legacy of Innovation and Environmental Responsibility

As ICM celebrates three decades of aquatic excellence, its journey serves as a testament to innovation, environmental responsibility, and the creation of unforgettable aquatic experiences. The legacy forged over these years is not just a reflection of the past but a promise for a dynamic, visionary, and awe-inspiring future. Here’s to 30 years of aquatic mastery and the anticipation of more groundbreaking endeavors in the years ahead.

The First Decade (1994-2004): Pioneering Collaborations and Educational Landmarks

ICM’s inaugural decade marked a period of groundbreaking collaborations and transformative projects that set the stage for the company’s ethos. Notably, the partnership with Landry’s Inc. in Houston resulted in iconic landmarks such as Landry’s Aquarium Restaurant and the Houston Downtown Aquarium, elevating restaurant re-fit-outs to new heights.

Venturing into Las Vegas, ICM revolutionized the casino industry by introducing state-of-the-art aquariums at Mandalay Bay, Caesars Palace, and Harrah’s, ushering in a new era of entertainment. The company also extended its expertise to educational institutions, leaving a lasting impression by integrating a 58,000 L saltwater aquarium into the Cerritos Library in LA (2001-2004), marking the world’s first “Experience Library.”

The Second Decade (2004-2014): Architectural Marvels and World Records

ICM’s second decade witnessed a wave of architectural marvels and world records.

The Burj Al Arab Entrance Aquariums in Dubai became a symbol of grandeur and sophistication, while the Mardan Palace Swim Reef in Turkey showcased immersive aquatic environments.

Guinness World Records recognized ICM’s Aviapark Aquarium Mall in Moscow, featuring a 20.31-meter-tall cylindrical aquarium, and Aqua Dream Casablanca in the Morocco Mall, with its colossal acrylic structure.

The Third Decade (2014-2024): Odes to Aquatic Marvels and Global Collaborations

In the third decade, ICM continued to craft odes to aquatic marvels, setting new standards in innovation. The “Sincere Sea Star Aquarium” at Chongqing Starlight 68 Mall, designed by Aedas, exemplified the profound connection between humanity and the marine universe.

Collaborations with Rainforest Café spanned nine countries and four continents, creating immersive dining and retail spaces that merged thematic artworks, sculptures, animatronics, and tropical reef aquariums.

The Hamad Port Aquarium in Qatar marked a milestone as the country’s first-ever aquarium, combining captivating displays with interactive exhibits, creating an educational haven. Across Scheels Sporting Goods stores in the US, ICM’s 61,000-liter double-arched aquariums redefined retail, seamlessly blending commerce with enchantment.

Lotte World Aquarium Hanoi in Vietnam became another jewel, featuring over 67 exhibits, including a 2,000,000-liter main saltwater tank with a breathtaking curved acrylic window.

Meanwhile, Angkor Wildlife and Aquarium (AWA) in Siem Reap, Cambodia, stood as a testament to nature and fascination, housing thousands of animals across expansive marine and wildlife dimensions. Beyond awe-inspiring displays, AWA became a stronghold for education and conservation.

The world’s tallest cylindrical aquarium (recognized by Guinness World Records since 2015), standing at a towering 21 meters and 6 meters in diameter, has become an internet sensation thanks to a giant inflatable dragon that descends from the top to the bottom of the cylindrical marvel.

The dragon covering the Aviapark Cylinder Aquarium, adorned in a riot of vibrant colors, has a cute and endearing face, turning the already spectacular aquarium into a visual delight.

ICM, the masterminds behind the unparalleled Cylindrical Aquarium, initially designed and constructed the record-setting structure to elevate the shopping experience at Aviapark Mall. The aquarium, a seamless integration of architectural beauty and underwater wonder, holds 370,000 liters of saltwater and features a wet-themed coral rock at its center, home to over 800 species.

However, it is the recent addition of the inflatable dragon that has set social media ablaze. Some Russian Instagram accounts seem interested, with images of the gigantic dragon, its catchy colors, and adorable appearance capturing the imagination of viewers. What was once a local marvel has now gone beyond borders, with the dragon’s charm spreading across international social media platforms.
